We are often asked where to get groceries and beverages while in Vallarta. While there are many opportunities to pick- up food, snacks and beverages, here are some of our tips: If you are staying on the South Side of Vallarta (also known as the “Zona Romantica” (Romantic Zone), “Olas Altas” (Los Muertos Beach) and sometimes even Old Town (the oldest part of Puerto Vallarta) is actually “Centro” (Downtown) but the South Side is charming, quaint and often mistaken as being the oldest part of the city).
Most of our vacation rental units are centrically located and very close to a myriad on small “tiendas” (shops), convenience stores, grocery stores or “mercados” (Markets). If you want one stop shopping, we suggest:
“Los Mercados” on Aquiles Serdan: (between Ignacio Vallarta street and Constitucion) less than two blocks from the Molina de Agua. Inside Los Mercados you will find Mikey’s Deli, a shop with prepared foods, butcher meat, sandwiches made to order, fresh breads, dairy items and cheeses, salads and imported goods and pantry items. Also inside of Los Mercados you will find Don Fresco, filled with fresh produce, grains, nuts, seeds and herbs and spices…. K’ rico:) is the coffee shop with juices, smoothies, pastries and beautiful cakes, tarts and locally grown and roasted coffee. Cork & Bottle is the shop for all of your adult beverage needs with fabulous wines, liquors, beer and bar supplies. Upstairs is a Paint-your-own-Ceramic studio which is the perfect place to unleash your creativity and make a custom designed souvenir.
OXXO and Kiosko are Mexican Chain Convenience stores that stock beverages, beer, alcohol, ice, juices, milk and soda. Plenty of snacks, candy, cookies, snack cakes and some basic pantry items can be found here.
Farmacias Guadalajara– open 24 hours and located on Insurgentes and Lazaro Cardenas. A good place to pick up cereal, dairy items, Mexican pastries, bread, even sliced deli ham and any personal items you need, shampoo, insect repellent, medicines, diapers, etc.
Emiliano Zapata Market (Mercado Emiliano Zapata) is located in the colonia (neighborhood) Emiliano Zapata which is also south of downtown Puerto Vallarta on Camichin and Lazaro Cardenas streets, about six blocks away from the beach. In and around this traditional Market you will find; “carnecerias” (butchers), “fruterias” (Fresh Produce markets) a “cremeria” (dairy shop), a “tortillaria” (Tortilla shop) and little shops selling everything under the sun.
Ley’s is the Mexican Chain grocery store located on the edge of Downtown Vallarta. It is on Avenida Mexico a few blocks before the start of the Malecon (and Hotel Rosita) Ley’s offers everything from dairy, produce, a deli (hot and cold Mexican items) a bakery, cleaning products to pretty much anything else you can imagine. Be sure to check out the second floor for clothing, personal items, sunglasses, jewelry, tools and make-up.
Farmer’s & Handcrafts Markets
There are many Farmer’s & Handcraft Markets around the Bay of Banderas. The original Old Town Farmer’s Market is the oldest and probably one of the busiest of the markets in the area. Located at Parque Lazaro Cardenas and Pino Suarez (streets) on the South Side of Vallarta. This is an outdoor market held every Saturday from November until May and offers a diverse group of Vendors who “Make it, bake it, or grow it” locally. Treasures you will find range from jewelry, to custom made clothes, swimwear, purses and bags, salsas, dips and fresh baked breads and baked goods (some Gluten Free), to handcrafted cheeses, soaps and lotions to art and sausages. This market also has a few local growers who harvest what is ripe and ready to sell. Bring a bag and be ready to sample, dance (live music weekly) and enjoy a Saturday. Open from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm (Saturday only).
Besides these centrally located shops and markets, Puerto Vallarta also has WalMart, Sam’s Club, Soriana, Comercial Mexicana(AKA Mega) and a Costco. If you are looking for anything in particular, please feel free to email us and we can try and help you locate what you are looking for.
